Coinbase Wallet Review: Is the 10% Swap-Fee Discount Worth Having?
Coinbase Wallet reviewed for readers worldwide: how the self-custody app works, what its swaps really cost, exactly what invite code 8SWGWGSD takes off and what it doesn't, the countries that are excluded, the recovery-phrase risk, user complaints and who should skip it.

Best for
People outside the excluded countries who want a self-custody wallet from a large company and will swap tokens inside the app often enough for a fee discount to add up.
Coinbase Wallet is a capable self-custody app that swaps tokens on ten networks, and code 8SWGWGSD takes 10% off its swap fee for as long as Coinbase runs the programme. The catch is the size of that fee: Coinbase charges up to 1% a swap, so the discount saves at most US$1 on every US$1,000 you trade and leaves you paying up to 0.9%, before gas and the aggregator's cut. Our call: if you were going to use Coinbase Wallet anyway, open it through the invite, because it costs nothing and the saving is permanent for that wallet. Don't choose the app for the discount, and check the quote against the DEX's own site before large swaps.
Pros
- 10% off the wallet's swap fee on every eligible swap, applied at the time of the swap, with no deposit or minimum
- Covers native same-chain swaps on every chain the app trades, not only Base
- Self-custody: your keys stay on your device and you don't need a Coinbase account or bank details
- Swaps on ten networks in one app, including Base, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain and Arbitrum
- Email or social log-in wallets can be recovered by signing in, and recovery phrases can be backed up to encrypted iCloud or Google Drive
- Rated 4.5 from 161,379 ratings on the US App Store
Watch-outs
- Swaps carry a Coinbase fee of up to 1%, so even with the code you pay up to 0.9%
- Excluded in the UK, Italy, Singapore, the Philippines, Malta, Latvia, Slovenia, the Dominican Republic and sanctioned countries
- The discount only applies to the wallet you create from the invite, in the same session
- Nothing off gas, cross-chain swaps, bridging or trades through mini-apps and the dapp browser
- The classic wallet closed on 15 August 2026 and networks such as Dogecoin and Litecoin no longer show in the app
- You can't export your transaction history, which makes tax records harder

What Coinbase Wallet is
Coinbase Wallet is Coinbase's self-custody app. The private keys sit on your phone rather than with an exchange, so nobody at Coinbase can move your funds, freeze them or get them back for you. It is a separate product from a Coinbase exchange account: you can set up a wallet without an email address or bank account, and linking a Coinbase account is optional. Coinbase renamed the app the Base app in 2025; in October 2026 the App Store listing and most help pages call it Coinbase Wallet again, although some pages still say Base.
The app is offered in 20 languages and more than 170 countries. Beyond holding tokens, it buys crypto with a card, Apple Pay or a linked Coinbase account, swaps tokens through DEX aggregators, sends USDC, and in selected countries outside the US offers perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid. Coinbase itself is a US-listed company, but a self-custody wallet isn't a bank or exchange account: there is no deposit insurance and no one to reverse a mistaken transfer.
Wallet types and networks
You can hold up to 10 wallets in the app. A smart wallet uses a passkey and works on EVM networks only. An email or social log-in wallet covers EVM networks, Solana and Bitcoin and comes back when you sign in again. A mnemonic wallet is restored only with its 12-word recovery phrase. Coinbase warns that smart and mnemonic wallets without an email or social sign-in can't be recovered if you lose the passkey or phrase.
In-app swaps work on Base, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, Monad and Robinhood Chain. Bitcoin can be held and sent but not swapped. The classic version of the wallet closed on 15 August 2026, and the new app doesn't show Dogecoin, Litecoin, XRP, Bitcoin Cash, Stellar, zkSync Era and a dozen other networks, or any network you added yourself. Those assets are still yours on-chain; you reach them by importing the recovery phrase into another wallet.
What a swap costs
Coinbase's help centre lists three costs on a swap. Coinbase Wallet charges a fee of up to 1%. The DEX aggregator that routes the trade may take its own fee, which is built into the amount of the token you receive. And every on-chain transaction pays a network fee to the chain. On top of that, the price can move against you by up to the slippage tolerance you set under Fees before confirming.
Take a US$1,000 swap from USDC into another token on Base. At the 1% maximum the wallet fee is US$10, the aggregator's cut is inside the quoted rate, and gas on Base is usually a few cents. The swap screen shows the fees before you swipe to confirm, so that is the number to check, not the headline rate.
The invite: 10% off, and exactly what it covers
Under Coinbase's referral terms, a wallet created through an invite gets a 10% discount on the prevailing fee for native, same-chain swaps started from the app's Trade tab, on every chain the app supports, for tokens Coinbase hasn't flagged as ineligible. The discount is taken off at the time of the swap, not paid back later, and it lasts as long as the referral relationship and the programme do. Coinbase may also apply it on other Coinbase Wallet surfaces it chooses, such as the browser extension or wallet.coinbase.com.
It doesn't cover network or gas fees, cross-chain swaps or bridging, volume through mini-apps, the dapp browser or other integrations, tokens Coinbase excludes for low liquidity or other risks, or any other wallet you create or import later. If the fee rate changes, the 10% scales with it, and Coinbase can change, reduce or end the programme at any time.
How to get the discount
Open our invite link on this page on your phone, install Coinbase Wallet from the official store and create a new wallet in that same session. Onboarding shows code 8SWGWGSD already filled in with the referrer's profile picture; leave it in place, because deleting it there means the wallet never gets the discount. If the app opens without the code, onboarding offers a field to enter one: type 8SWGWGSD before you finish.
Each wallet can have only one referrer, fixed once onboarding completes, and a wallet you already had can't be added afterwards. Disclosure: 8SWGWGSD is our own invite code. Coinbase pays the person who shared the link 25% of the net fee the referred wallet pays on eligible swaps, in USDC, so we can earn from your swaps; it comes out of Coinbase's fee and your price is the discounted one either way.
What the discount is worth
The saving is a tenth of the wallet fee, so at most 0.1% of what you swap: up to US$1 on US$1,000, US$5 on US$5,000 a month, or US$50 on US$50,000. For an occasional swapper that is pocket change; for an active trader on Base or Solana it adds up over a year without any extra effort.
Keep it in proportion. With the code you still pay up to 0.9% to Coinbase on top of the pool's own fee, which is a lot for large trades. Before a big swap, compare the in-app quote with the DEX's own site. The discount makes Coinbase Wallet cheaper than it was, not cheap.
Who can use it
You must be 18 or over and of legal age where you live, and you must both live in and use the app from an eligible country. Residents of the Dominican Republic, Italy, Latvia, Malta, the Philippines, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and OFAC-sanctioned countries can't get the discount or the referrer reward. Coinbase can change that list, and it says the programme is void where prohibited.
Some features have their own maps. USDC rewards of up to 3.35% APY are rolling out in the US only, need a linked Coinbase account and aren't offered in the EU or Canada. Perpetual futures are for non-US users in selected countries. Don't use a VPN to reach an excluded feature: the terms require you to live in, and access the app from, an eligible country.
Security and the recovery phrase
Coinbase Wallet generates a 12-word recovery phrase for each mnemonic wallet. Coinbase never sees it, so if you lose it, the funds in that wallet are gone. You can back it up to iCloud or Google Drive, encrypted with a password only you know, and you should also write it down. The phrase hides itself after 60 seconds and Coinbase asks you not to screenshot it. Never type it into a website: anyone asking for it is a scammer.
The app has built-in warnings for malicious sites, and email or social log-in wallets add multi-factor authentication and recovery through your account. Signing out removes recovery-phrase wallets from the app, and they must be re-imported one by one. You also can't export your transaction history, so keep your own record of swaps if your country taxes crypto disposals.
Other costs and features
Sending USDC on Base is free up to a point: Coinbase sponsors network fees of up to US$0.30 a transaction and US$2 a month per user. Buying crypto with a card or Apple Pay shows its fee on the review screen before you confirm, and moving funds between the app and a Coinbase account happens on-chain with normal network fees.
The app also lists token launches, sets limit orders and shows candlestick charts. Spot trades go through third-party DEX aggregators; Coinbase Wallet doesn't exchange assets itself, which is why the fee sits on top of the pool's price.
What users complain about
On 24 October 2026 Coinbase Wallet was rated 4.5 from 161,379 ratings on the US App Store and 4.0 from about 134,000 reviews on Google Play. The averages are high, but recent low ratings cluster around the forced move to the new app.
The recurring complaints are assets on dropped networks such as Dogecoin and Litecoin disappearing from view after the update, the removal of the legacy mode, custom networks and some dapp access, swap fees that feel high, confusing navigation, frequent marketing notifications, and support handled mostly by a chatbot.
Who should use it, and who should skip it
Use it, through the invite, if you want a self-custody wallet from a large company, live in an eligible country and expect to swap regularly on Base, Solana or another supported chain. The code costs nothing and keeps saving on every eligible swap that wallet makes.
Skip it if you live in an excluded country, hold mainly assets on networks the app has dropped, mostly bridge between chains, or trade size where a 0.9% fee matters more than convenience. And if a 12-word phrase you alone are responsible for worries you, an exchange account may suit you better than any self-custody wallet.
FAQ
- What does code 8SWGWGSD give me?
- A 10% discount on Coinbase Wallet's swap fee for native, same-chain swaps from the Trade tab, on the wallet you create from the invite. There is no cash or token bonus.
- Can I add the code to a wallet I already have?
- No. The discount is tied to the wallet created from the invite in the same session, and each wallet's referrer is fixed once onboarding completes.
- Does the discount cover gas fees?
- No. It comes off Coinbase's fee only. Network fees, the aggregator's cut, cross-chain swaps and bridging are not discounted.
- How much will I actually save?
- At the 1% maximum fee, US$1 on every US$1,000 you swap. Someone swapping US$5,000 a month saves up to US$5 a month.
- Which countries can't use the invite?
- The Dominican Republic, Italy, Latvia, Malta, the Philippines, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and OFAC-sanctioned countries. Coinbase can change the list.
- Is Coinbase Wallet the same as a Coinbase account?
- No. Coinbase Wallet is self-custody: the keys are on your device and you don't need a Coinbase account. A Coinbase exchange account holds crypto for you.
- What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?
- Coinbase can't restore a mnemonic wallet, so the funds are lost. Back the phrase up to encrypted cloud storage and on paper before you fund the wallet.
- Does the discount expire?
- It runs while the referral relationship and the programme last. Coinbase can change, reduce or end it at any time.
