Hyperliquid Review: Is the 4% Fee Discount Worth Having?
Hyperliquid reviewed for traders outside the US: what code HISAM's 4% fee discount is really worth, the fee tiers, funding and liquidation rules, the deposit traps, who can't use it and who should skip it.

Best for
Experienced crypto traders outside the US and Ontario who already trade perpetual futures, can run their own wallet safely, and want lower fees on an on-chain order book.
Hyperliquid is a serious trading venue with low base fees (0.045% taker, 0.015% maker on perpetuals), and HISAM takes 4% off them for your first $25 million of volume. That is worth having if you trade there anyway, but it is small: $0.36 on a $10,000 position opened and closed, and $450 at the very most. The bigger questions are elsewhere. Hyperliquid is not licensed anywhere, you hold your own keys, and leveraged positions can be liquidated fast. Use the code if you already trade perps; don't start trading perps because of it.
Pros
- Low base fees: 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker on perpetuals, with no gas to place or cancel orders
- HISAM takes 4% off your fees for the first $25 million of volume, with no time limit
- The discount applies on top of your volume tier and any HYPE staking discount
- Fully on-chain order books: every trade and liquidation is publicly visible
- Most liquidations go through the order book, so you keep any margin left after the close
- No identity check to start: connect a wallet or log in with email
Watch-outs
- Not licensed or registered with any regulator, and closed to anyone in the US or Ontario
- The discount is small: at most $450 over the whole $25 million
- Vault and sub-account trades get no discount
- Deposits under 5 USDC are lost when you connect a wallet
- Leverage up to 40x, with hourly funding and liquidation that can wipe out your margin
- Support runs through documentation and community channels, where impersonators target users

What Hyperliquid is
Hyperliquid is a layer-1 blockchain built around a trading engine. Its HyperCore layer runs fully on-chain order books for perpetual futures and spot trading, and its HyperEVM layer runs Ethereum-style smart contracts. Every order, cancellation, trade and liquidation is written to the public chain. Core development is led by Hyperliquid Labs, and the web app at app.hyperliquid.xyz is provided by Hyperliquid Corp.
It is not a broker or a bank. Hyperliquid's terms say neither the app nor the chain is licensed, approved or registered by any regulator anywhere, and that you must use your own non-custodial wallet, which the company cannot access or recover. There is no deposit protection and no compensation scheme behind your balance.
The app is closed to people who live in, are located in or are incorporated in the United States or Ontario, Canada, to anyone in a sanctioned jurisdiction, and to citizens of sanctioned jurisdictions wherever they live. Using a VPN to get round that breaks the terms. Everyone else still has to check their own country's rules on crypto derivatives.
What code HISAM gives you
Joining through our link, or typing HISAM on the Referrals page, gives you 4% off your trading fees for your first $25 million of volume. Hyperliquid sets no time limit; the only cap is the volume. It is a discount on fees you pay, not cash, tokens or a sign-up payment, so it is worth nothing until you trade.
The discount applies after your volume tier and any HYPE staking discount, to taker fees and to maker fees, but it does not increase maker rebates. Trades from vaults and sub-accounts get no discount, because Hyperliquid's clearinghouse treats them as separate accounts. The $10,000 volume figure you may see in the docs is what you need to create your own code, not to use ours.
Disclosure: HISAM is our code. Hyperliquid pays the referrer 10% of the fees you pay, less your discount, on your first $1 billion of volume, so we earn from your trading. Join through our link before your first trade so every fee gets the discount.
What the discount is actually worth
At the base tier, a $10,000 position opened and closed as taker orders is $20,000 of volume and $9.00 in fees. With HISAM you pay $8.64, so you save $0.36. Trade $1 million as taker over a year and the saving is $18.
The ceiling is $450: the whole $25 million at the base taker rate. In practice it is lower, because once your 14-day volume passes $5 million your tier rate drops below the base rate, and maker-only trading saves at most $150. The discount is a small, permanent trim to a cost you would pay anyway, never a reason to trade more.
Fees in full
Fees depend on your rolling 14-day volume, with spot volume counted double. On perpetuals the base tier pays 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker, falling to 0.040% and 0.012% above $5 million, and down to 0.024% taker and 0% maker above $7 billion. Spot starts at 0.070% taker and 0.040% maker. Large makers with more than 0.5% of maker volume earn small rebates instead of paying.
Staking HYPE cuts fees further: 5% off with more than 10 HYPE staked, 10% above 100, 15% above 1,000, 20% above 10,000, 30% above 100,000 and 40% above 500,000. Builder-deployed (HIP-3) markets can charge up to several times the normal fee, so check the fee shown on the order ticket before you trade an unfamiliar market.
Placing and cancelling orders costs no gas. You pay network gas only to deposit, and withdrawals need 1 USDC available. Fees go to the HLP vault, the assistance fund, which turns them into HYPE that is burned, and market deployers.
Funding, margin and liquidation
Hyperliquid's perpetuals never expire. Instead, longs and shorts pay each other funding every hour. The built-in interest part is 0.01% every eight hours, about 11.6% a year paid by longs to shorts when the market is flat, and the premium part moves with demand. Funding is capped at 4% an hour, a much looser cap than most exchanges use.
Maximum leverage runs from 3x to 40x depending on the asset; BTC allows 40x and many smaller coins 10x. The maintenance margin is half the initial margin at maximum leverage, from 1.25% for 40x assets to 16.7% for 3x assets. When your account equity falls below it, Hyperliquid sends market orders to close the position, and you keep whatever margin is left.
If equity drops below two-thirds of the maintenance margin before the book can close you, the liquidator vault takes over the position and the maintenance margin is not returned. For cross-margin positions that can leave your account at zero. Stop-loss orders and lower leverage are the only real protection.
Setting up without losing money
You can connect an EVM wallet such as Rabby or MetaMask, or log in with an email code, which creates a wallet for you that you can export. Either way there is no identity check. On mobile, Hyperliquid's docs point to Dexari, MetaMask and Phantom, or the web app; Hyperliquid publishes no app of its own, so store apps with its name are third-party.
Deposits are where people lose money. With a connected wallet, USDC must come from Arbitrum and anything under 5 USDC is lost for good. With email login you can send USDC on Arbitrum, Base, Ethereum or Polygon; under 5 USDC bounces back to your email wallet, and under 1 USDC is lost. BTC, ETH, SOL and some other coins arrive through Unit, an independent team.
To take money out, use Withdraw, not Send: Send only moves funds to another address on Hyperliquid, and money sent that way to an exchange address can't be recovered until that exchange supports the chain. Legacy-bridge withdrawals to Arbitrum arrive in three to four minutes.
Vaults, HLP and sub-accounts
HLP is Hyperliquid's community-owned protocol vault. It makes markets, runs backstop liquidations and earns a share of fees, and anyone can deposit to share its profit and loss. Deposits are locked for four days after your most recent deposit, and HLP can lose money as well as make it.
Sub-accounts unlock after $100,000 of volume, ten at first. They share the master account's fee tier but not its referral discount. If you plan to trade mainly from vaults or sub-accounts, HISAM saves you nothing on that volume.
Security is your job
Hyperliquid is non-custodial: anyone with your seed phrase or private key controls your account, and nobody can reverse their transactions. Hyperliquid's own advice is to treat a compromised address as burned, move what's left to a new wallet and revoke smart-contract approvals.
A hardware wallet paired with a browser wallet keeps your key off the computer. Bookmark app.hyperliquid.xyz rather than clicking search ads, never type your seed phrase into a website, and treat any direct message offering support as a scam, as Hyperliquid's own guidance does.
What users complain about
Hyperliquid has no app of its own to rate. Its Trustpilot page, which Hyperliquid hasn't claimed, scored 2.0 from 15 reviews on 24 October 2026, almost all one-star, so treat it as a small sample.
The recurring complaints are wallets flagged or frozen over alleged links to sanctioned addresses with no appeal route, support that runs through Discord, scammers posing as support in direct messages, fees and slippage on fast markets, and newly listed coins dropping soon after launch. Hyperliquid's own support pages add deposits below the minimum, Send used instead of Withdraw, and liquidations traders didn't expect.
Who should use it, and who should skip it
Use it if you already trade perpetual futures, understand funding and liquidation, live outside the US, Ontario and sanctioned countries, and can keep a wallet safe. In that case HISAM is a small, permanent saving on every fee, so join through our link before your first trade.
Skip it if you are new to leverage, want a regulated account with someone to call when things go wrong, need deposit protection, or would trade more to make the discount count. The 4% never offsets a single bad liquidation.
FAQ
- What does Hyperliquid code HISAM give me?
- 4% off your trading fees for your first $25 million of volume. It is a fee discount, not cash or tokens, and it has no time limit.
- How do I apply the code?
- Join through our link on this page, or enter HISAM on the Referrals page in the app before you trade. Check there that the discount shows on your main account.
- How much will I actually save?
- At the base tier, $0.36 on a $10,000 position opened and closed, $18 on $1 million of taker volume, and $450 at most over the whole $25 million.
- Do I need $10,000 of volume to use HISAM?
- No. $10,000 of volume is what you need to create your own referral code. Using ours has no threshold.
- Does the discount apply to vaults and sub-accounts?
- No. Hyperliquid treats them as separate accounts, so only trades from your main account get the 4%.
- Can I use Hyperliquid from the US?
- No. The terms bar anyone who lives, is located or is incorporated in the US or Ontario, plus sanctioned jurisdictions and their citizens. Using a VPN breaks the terms.
- Is my money protected?
- No. Hyperliquid is not licensed anywhere, there is no deposit protection, and you hold your own keys: a lost seed phrase or a signed scam transaction can't be reversed.
- What is the minimum deposit?
- 5 USDC. With a connected wallet, smaller deposits are lost; with email login they bounce back to your email wallet, and anything under 1 USDC is lost.
