Marriott Bonvoy Review: Is Joining Through Reward a Friend Worth 10,000 Points?

Marriott Bonvoy reviewed for UK travellers: how the free programme earns and spends points, what Reward a Friend's 2,000 points per stay are really worth, the booking rules that cancel the bonus, the complaints, and who should skip it.

Best for

UK travellers who expect several separate paid stays at Marriott hotels in the next year and will book them directly with Marriott.

Marriott Bonvoy is free, and worth joining if you stay with Marriott anyway: member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in come with booking direct. Joining through our Reward a Friend invitation adds 2,000 bonus points for each of your first five paid stays within 365 days, 10,000 in all. At Marriott's own fixed Homes & Villas rate those 10,000 points are worth about US$56, roughly £42: a pleasant bonus, not a reason to book. It only works if the invitation is how you join, with no Bonvoy account beforehand, and if you book with Marriott, because rooms from Booking.com, Expedia and other third-party sites earn nothing.

Pros

  • Membership is free, with member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in on direct bookings
  • 2,000 bonus points for each of your first five paid stays within 365 days, on top of normal points
  • Most Marriott brands earn 10 base points per US dollar of room rate
  • Each separate stay counts, so five one-night stays earn the full 10,000
  • Points can be spent at a fixed rate on Homes & Villas (178.57 points per US$1) as well as on hotel nights
  • Points don't expire while you earn or spend at least once every 24 months

Watch-outs

  • The referral is fixed at enrolment: an existing Bonvoy account can't be referred, and a sponsor can't be added later
  • Rooms booked through Booking.com, Expedia or other third-party sites earn no points and don't count
  • Consecutive nights at one hotel are a single stay, even if you check out and back in
  • Points are earned on the room rate before VAT, so a £300 UK stay earns on about £250
  • The invitation is sent by hand, so it isn't instant
  • 10,000 points are worth about US$56 at the Homes & Villas rate, and award nights are priced by date

What Marriott Bonvoy is

Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott International's loyalty programme, covering its hotel brands from Courtyard and Moxy to W, JW Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton. Membership is free for anyone aged 18 or over, one account per person. Booking through Marriott's website or app, members get member rates, free in-room Wi-Fi and mobile check-in, with the phone as a room key at hotels that offer it (Marriott Bonvoy benefits).

Status comes with nights: Silver Elite at 10 nights a year (10% more points), Gold at 25 (25% more), Platinum at 50 (50% more) and Titanium at 75. For most people joining through a referral, the base membership and the bonus points are what matter; status only starts to count if you spend ten or more nights a year in Marriott hotels.

How you earn points

Most brands pay 10 base points per US dollar of qualifying spend. Residence Inn, Element, TownePlace Suites, Protea, Four Points Flex, City Express, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments and Homes & Villas pay 5, and StudioRes pays 4. Pounds are converted to dollars at a rate Marriott chooses, which may differ from the one on your bill (Program Rules).

Qualifying spend is the room rate plus eligible extras charged to the room, such as dining. Taxes, service charges, resort fees, parking and gratuities earn nothing, and because UK room prices include 20% VAT, a £300 stay earns on about £250.

Give your membership number when you book or at check-in. Rooms booked through a tour operator or an online travel site such as Expedia, Booking.com, Hotwire or Priceline, group rates you don't pay the hotel for yourself, package and wholesale rates, free rooms and vouchers are all non-qualifying: no points and no member benefits.

How Reward a Friend works

Under Marriott's Reward a Friend terms, a new member who joins through an invitation earns 2,000 bonus points for each paid stay, starting with the first, for up to five stays completed within 365 days of enrolment. That is up to 10,000 bonus points on top of the base points each stay earns. Stays must be at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and you must pick points, not airline miles, as your earning preference (Reward a Friend terms).

A stay means consecutive nights at the same hotel, however you check in and out. Five nights in one hotel is one stay and earns 2,000 bonus points; five one-night stays at different hotels, or at the same hotel on separate trips, earn 10,000. Award stays paid with points aren't paid stays.

The rule that catches people: a sponsor has to be named when you enrol and can't be added afterwards. If you join Bonvoy through the app, a hotel or a booking before the invitation arrives, the referral is lost, and an existing member can't be referred at all.

Timeline: ask us for the invitation, join from Marriott's email with no existing Bonvoy account and points chosen rather than miles, enrolment starts the 365-day window, paid stays 1 to 5 booked with Marriott earn 2,000 bonus points each, for 10,000 bonus points plus base points. A stay is consecutive nights at one hotel; third-party bookings and award stays don't count.

Getting the invitation from us

Use the invite request in the offer box on this page: enter the email address you want the invitation sent to. Our editor then sends it by hand through Marriott's Reward a Friend form, so it isn't instant. Marriott emails you the invitation; join from the link in that email, and don't open a Bonvoy account any other way in the meantime. Use your own address, never someone else's.

Disclosure: the invitation comes from BonusRoam's own Marriott Bonvoy account, so Marriott gives us 2,000 points for each of your first five paid stays too. Marriott limits each member to five referrals a year, and the bonus on your side is the same 2,000 per stay whoever invites you. We use your email only to send the invitation.

What the bonus is worth

A worked example: five separate two-night stays at £150 a night including VAT, booked direct at brands earning 10 points per dollar. Each £300 stay qualifies on about £250 after VAT; at the ECB's rate on 23 October 2026 (about US$1.34 per £1) that is roughly US$334, so about 3,340 base points plus 2,000 bonus. Over five stays that is about 16,700 base points and 10,000 bonus points, roughly 26,700 in total.

Marriott publishes one fixed exchange rate for points: Homes & Villas rentals cost 178.57 points per US dollar. On that basis the 10,000 bonus points are worth about US$56 (£42) and all 26,700 points about US$150 (£112). Marriott sells points at US$12.50 per 1,000 outside promotions, so buying the bonus would cost US$125; it is worth having, but no one should pay that (Program Rules).

Hotel award nights have no fixed chart; the points price moves with the date and the hotel, so compare it with the cash rate before you redeem. On £1,500 of stays, the bonus is worth under 3% at the Homes & Villas rate. It sweetens trips you were taking anyway and isn't a reason to book more.

Worked example: five 2-night stays at £150 a night including VAT, booked direct. Each stay earns about 3,340 base points plus 2,000 bonus points: about 16,700 base and 10,000 bonus, around 26,700 points in all. At Marriott's Homes & Villas rate of 178.57 points per US$1 the bonus is worth about US$56 (£42) and all points about US$150 (£112).

The rules that cost people the bonus

Booking a Marriott hotel on Booking.com or Expedia for a weekend earns nothing and doesn't count as one of your five stays. A week at one hotel is one stay. Paying with points isn't a paid stay. Choosing airline miles instead of points rules you out. And the 365 days run from the day you enrol, not the day you asked for the invitation, so join when your first stay is coming up rather than months before.

If a stay is missing, Marriott accepts missing-credit requests up to a year after the stay; keep your booking confirmations and folios. New members can also ask for points on eligible stays in the 30 days before they enrolled, but the Reward a Friend bonus only covers stays in the 365 days after you enrol (Program Rules).

Spending points, and keeping them

Points pay for hotel nights, Homes & Villas rentals and other rewards, or can be converted to airline miles. On award stays of five nights, the cheapest night is free (Marriott calls this Stay for 5, Pay for 4), which makes longer redemptions better value.

Points stay alive as long as your account has qualifying activity, such as a stay or earning or redeeming points, at least once every 24 months. After 24 months with none, every point is forfeited and can't be reinstated, so a single small stay or redemption every couple of years keeps them.

What members complain about

On 24 October 2026 the Marriott Bonvoy app was rated 4.9 from 61,548 ratings on the UK App Store and 4.8 on Google Play in the UK, from 558,707 ratings across all countries. High scores, but the low-rated reviews are consistent.

Members report having to reset passwords almost every time they log in, no easy way to reach a person, errors when spending points on the shopping site, the app refusing to run on older iPhones and iPads that can't update to iOS 18, and rates labelled both non-refundable and free cancellation. Screenshot the rate terms before you book, and check after every stay that the points, and the 2,000 bonus, have posted.

Joining, privacy and leaving

Joining is free; you need to be 18 or over, and each person may hold one account. Your details go to Marriott, whose record on data is worth knowing: in October 2020 the UK Information Commissioner's Office fined Marriott £18.4 million over the breach of the Starwood guest reservation database, which exposed around 339 million guest records worldwide (ICO penalty notice).

To leave, send written notice to Marriott Bonvoy Member Support. Cancelling forfeits unredeemed points, awards and status immediately, so spend your points first.

Who should join through the invite, and who should skip it

Join through the invitation if you don't have a Bonvoy account yet and expect at least a few separate paid Marriott stays in the next year, booked through Marriott: a weekend in Edinburgh, a work trip, a holiday hotel. Five such stays add 10,000 points for no extra cost.

Skip it if you already have an account, if you usually book hotels through comparison or package sites, if your Marriott stays would be one long trip, or if you'd be choosing Marriott over a cheaper hotel just for the points. At about £42 for the full bonus, a cheaper room elsewhere often wins.

FAQ

How do I get the Marriott Bonvoy invitation?
Enter your email in the invite request on this page. Our editor sends the Reward a Friend invitation by hand, and you join from the link in Marriott's email.
How many bonus points can I earn?
2,000 for each paid stay, up to five stays completed within 365 days of enrolment: 10,000 bonus points on top of the base points each stay earns.
I already have a Marriott Bonvoy account. Can I use the invite?
No. Marriott sets the sponsor when you enrol and won't add one later, so only someone joining for the first time through the invitation qualifies.
Do stays booked on Booking.com or Expedia count?
No. Marriott treats rooms booked through third-party travel sites as non-qualifying, so they earn no points and no bonus. Book through Marriott's website or app.
Does a five-night stay count as five stays?
No. Consecutive nights at the same hotel are one stay, so it earns one 2,000-point bonus. Five separate stays earn the full 10,000.
What are 10,000 Marriott points worth?
About US$56 (roughly £42) at Marriott's fixed Homes & Villas rate of 178.57 points per US$1. Hotel award nights vary by date, so compare points and cash prices before redeeming.
When do the 365 days start?
On the day you enrol in Marriott Bonvoy, not the day you request the invitation. Join when your first stay is near.
Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?
Only after 24 consecutive months without qualifying activity, such as a stay or earning or redeeming points. Then all points are forfeited.
