MaxRewards Review (US): Is Gold Worth $108 a Year, and What Does the Free Month Save?
MaxRewards reviewed for people with US credit cards: what the free Bronze tier does, what Gold and Platinum add and cost, how the app logs in to your card accounts, what the one-month referral credit is worth, the trial and refund rules, user complaints and who should skip it.

Best for
People in the US with several rewards credit cards from Amex, Chase, Citi, Bank of America or Wells Fargo who keep missing card-linked offers and quarterly bonus categories, and who are comfortable giving an app their card logins.
The free Bronze tier is a handy dashboard for anyone juggling several US credit cards, and code jimmyk5996 adds one month of Gold credit once you add a card. That credit is worth US$9: it takes the minimum annual Gold charge from US$108 to US$99 when your 7-day trial ends, and it can't be used for anything else. Gold pays for itself only if the offers and bonus categories it activates save you more than that, on cards whose offers you don't already switch on yourself in the issuers' apps. Our call: join with the code, try Gold for the week, and set a reminder before day 7, because the trial turns into a full-year charge that doesn't appear in Apple's subscription list.
Pros
- Free Bronze tier shows balances, bills, credit scores, rewards earned and which card to use by category or location
- Code jimmyk5996 gives a one-month Gold credit, US$9 off the minimum annual price
- Gold auto-activates card-linked offers and quarterly bonus categories on Amex, Chase, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo accounts
- Pay-what-you-want pricing from US$108 a year, with a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back promise
- Card logins are encrypted with two keys held by different cloud providers, and the app can't move money
- MaxRewards says it doesn't sell user data and is funded by subscriptions
Watch-outs
- Works only with US credit card accounts
- Gold is billed a year at a time; new members can't pay monthly
- The trial turns into an annual charge outside Apple's subscription system, so deleting the app doesn't cancel it
- Connections drop and often need a manual sync, the top complaint in app reviews
- You hand over card logins, and only text or email 2FA codes work, not app or biometric 2FA
- Rated 3.5 on Google Play from about 2,340 reviews

What MaxRewards does
MaxRewards is a US app that pulls your credit card accounts into one place: balances, rewards earned, bills and autopay status, utilization, issuer credit scores and every card's benefits. Its main job is telling you which card to use, by spending category or by where you are, and on Gold it activates the card-linked offers and rotating bonus categories you would otherwise have to switch on card by card. A browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Safari suggests a card at checkout.
MaxRewards says it has more than 900,000 members. It is free to download, most features are free, and the company says it is funded by Gold subscriptions and does not and will not sell user data.
Bronze, Gold and Platinum
Bronze is free: aggregated balances, rewards and utilization, bills, credit scores, transactions, card recommendations by category and location, and rewards earned. Gold starts at US$9 a month, billed as US$108 a year, and adds offer auto-activation and consolidation, the Card Value tracker (annual fee against value earned from benefits, rewards and offers), bonus, reward-cap and recurring trackers, a benefits tracker, deal notifications and priority support.
Platinum starts at US$20 a month, billed as US$240 a year, and adds spend profiles that separate business and personal cards, receipts matched to transactions automatically, business or IRS Schedule C categories and CSV export. Both paid tiers are pay-what-you-want above the minimum, come with a 7-day free trial and have been annual-only for new members since 29 June 2023. You can change your price in your subscription details, and it applies at the next renewal.
How it connects to your cards
Most finance apps link banks through Plaid or an official bank API. MaxRewards built its own connectors instead, because commercial aggregators can't read reward balances, offers or benefits, or activate anything for you; for issuers without an API, such as American Express in the US, that means logging in to your account with your username and password. You can connect personal and business cards from American Express, Bank of America, Barclays, Capital One, Chase, Citi, Discover, Goldman Sachs, Synchrony, US Bank and Wells Fargo, and add cards from dozens of other issuers and credit unions without connecting them.
Your credentials are encrypted with two keys, one in MaxRewards' main database and one with a different cloud provider, and the app reaches the database only through a middleware layer. MaxRewards has no permission to make, change or block payments or transfers. Some banks make you complete two-factor authentication on each sync, and only codes by text or email work, not app or biometric 2FA. Only some accounts refresh automatically; the rest update when you pull down on the Wallet screen.
The referral credit: one month of Gold
Enter code jimmyk5996 when onboarding asks for a referral code, or later in the app: open the menu on the Home tab and choose Credits under the Gold section. MaxRewards' Help Center says the referral completes once you add a card, and the reward is a Gold credit: a one-month discount on the annual Gold subscription.
The credit can't be used for the free trial and doesn't switch Gold on by itself. Start Gold from the Benefits or Offers tab with an eligible account connected, and the credit comes off the charge at the end of your 7-day trial; if you already have Gold, unused credits come off your next renewal. Your renewal invoice shows the full price, but the charge is reduced by your credits.
Disclosure: jimmyk5996 is BonusRoam's own code. When you add a card, MaxRewards gives us a free month of Gold as well; it costs you nothing.
What year one of Gold costs
At the US$108 minimum, one month is worth US$9, so a single referral credit makes the first year US$99. Credits stack: MaxRewards' own example is six unused credits turning a US$108 renewal into a US$54 charge. If you pick a higher price on the pay-what-you-want scale, one month is worth correspondingly more.
The timing is what catches people. Day 0 is when you start the Gold trial, day 7 is when the year's charge lands, and the 30-day money-back promise runs from the day the subscription starts. After that, MaxRewards doesn't refund the year.
Is Gold worth paying for?
Gold earns its fee through offers you would otherwise miss: Amex Offers, Chase Offers, Citi Merchant Offers and BankAmeriDeals activated on every card, plus rotating bonus categories switched on each quarter. MaxRewards says members earn US$295 in cash back and 40% more rewards in their first year, and that over 97% of active subscribers use an offer within the year; those are its own averages, from 2023.
Run your own numbers. If Gold surfaces just two US$50 statement-credit offers you'd have missed, it has paid for a US$99 first year. If you hold one or two cards and already add offers in the Amex and Chase apps, Bronze gives you the dashboard for free and Gold mostly saves you taps. The benefit grows with the number of cards and issuers you hold.
Trial, cancelling and refunds
Cancel in the app under Profile, the gear icon, Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription, after a short survey and a spin-the-wheel offer of credits to stay. MaxRewards doesn't bill through Apple, even if you paid with Apple Pay, so it never appears in Apple's subscriptions and deleting the app cancels nothing. Cancel before the 7-day trial ends if you don't want the year's charge.
Cancelling keeps Gold until the end of the period you paid for and doesn't refund it by itself. To get your money back, ask support within 30 days of the subscription starting, through Profile, Contact Us or [email protected]; MaxRewards may offer a partial refund to keep you, and accepting it rules out a full refund later. Refunds take 5 to 10 business days. Don't open a bank dispute first: MaxRewards can't refund while one is open.
What users complain about
On 24 October 2026 MaxRewards was rated 4.5 from 16,923 ratings on the US App Store and 3.5 from about 2,340 reviews on Google Play, where it has more than 100,000 downloads.
The complaints repeat: connections that drop and need a manual sync every time the app opens, the app hanging on its loading screen, trials that turned into a year's charge people didn't expect or couldn't find in Apple's subscriptions, cards from smaller issuers that can't be added, constant prompts to upgrade, and unease about storing bank logins on MaxRewards' servers.
Who can use it
MaxRewards supports US credit card accounts only, so it is for people with US-issued cards; cards from other countries can't be connected. You need online login details for each card account you connect, with text or email 2FA set up where the bank uses it.
The offer auto-activation that justifies Gold needs eligible accounts, which MaxRewards says typically means most Amex, Bank of America, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo cards. With only a credit union card or a store card, Gold has little to activate.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
Get it if you carry several rewards cards from the big US issuers, want one place to see balances and benefits, and suspect you're leaving card-linked offers unused. Join with the code, connect your cards on Bronze, then decide during the 7-day trial whether Gold's activations are worth US$99.
Skip Gold if you have one or two cards and already activate offers yourself, if you won't give an app your bank logins, or if you're likely to forget the trial. Bronze alone is free and still useful.
