Best for
Anyone from the UK heading to Japan who will shop in drugstores, supermarkets or Don Quijote and wants to know what a product is, what's in it and what other buyers think before paying.
Payke is a free Japanese app that turns a product barcode into a page of details and reviews in English, Chinese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese. It covers about 750,000 products, which Payke says is around 90% of what visitors pick up, so it earns its place on a Japan trip for allergies, medicines and cosmetics alone. The invite is a small extra: enter ZMH3HZVG when you register and the invite shows 500 Payke POINT. Payke prices points at 10 to ¥1, so that's ¥50, about 24p, and it only goes towards Payke's eSIMs, proxy-shopping coupons or gift cards. Install it for the scanner; treat the points as a token gesture.
Pros
- Scan a barcode to read product details and reviews in seven languages, including English and both Chinese scripts
- About 750,000 products on file, around 90% of what visitors pick up, per Payke
- Free, and needs no permissions to open; the camera is only used when you scan
- Store coupons from big chains such as Don Quijote, Bic Camera and Daikoku Drug
- Points redeem against Payke's own eSIM, which starts at ¥330 for 2 days and 500MB
- Payke Express ships Japanese products to you after the trip at tax-free prices
Watch-outs
- The 500 invite points are worth ¥50, about 24p
- Points only redeem inside Payke and expire after a year with no point activity
- Some products still come back with no data
- You type the invitation code yourself; the link doesn't carry it
- Payke doesn't publish proxy-shopping fees on an open page, and UK import VAT and duty on Payke Express orders are yours
- Users report slow support replies on proxy purchases and loading problems after some updates

What Payke is
Payke is a shopping app for visitors to Japan, run by Payke Inc. of Naha, Okinawa, which was founded in November 2014 and has run the app since 2015. It holds data on about 750,000 products in seven languages (Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese) and says more than 5.5 million people have used it.
The app is free on iPhone and Android, including the UK App Store. It also carries store coupons, product rankings, articles on popular buys, a chat service for buying Japanese products by proxy, the Payke Express online shop and its own eSIM, all tied together by a loyalty scheme called Payke POINT.
Scanning and translation in the shop
Point the camera at a barcode and Payke shows that product's name, description, ingredients and directions in your language, with user reviews and its ranking in the category. It works on cosmetics, medicines, food, health supplements, household goods and souvenirs, which is where the Japanese-only packaging bites hardest.
That makes it most useful for allergy and ingredient checks, comparing near-identical skincare lines, and reading dosage notes on over-the-counter medicines. Payke says its data covers around 90% of products visitors pick up; for the rest, check the pack with a translation app and ask staff before buying medicines you can't read.
Coupons, rankings and the shopping AI
The coupon tab collects discount coupons from chains such as Don Quijote, Bic Camera, Daikoku Drug and GU. They usually take a percentage off above a spend threshold; Don Quijote's, as shown in Payke's store screenshots, gives 5% off ¥10,000 or 7% off ¥30,000 before tax. Show the coupon at the till before you pay.
Since April 2026 Payke has added a shopping concierge AI, in beta, that answers questions such as which shop suits your list, how two versions of a product differ, and how the tax-free process works for a purchase. Rankings show what's selling in each category, useful for picking presents.
How Payke POINT works
Payke POINT launched on 4 September 2025. You earn points by joining campaigns, using the app and playing its free games, some of which award more than 5,000 points. Payke's own point screen prices them at 10 points to ¥1 and notes the rate may vary with exchange rates.
Points redeem for Payke eSIMs, Payke Japan proxy-shopping coupons and gift cards, including prepaid cards usable in Japan. They aren't cash, can't be withdrawn, and expire automatically if your balance doesn't change for a year, so spend a single trip's points before you fly home.
What the 500 invite points are worth
Open our link on your phone, install Payke and, during registration of a new account, type ZMH3HZVG in the invitation code field; the link doesn't fill it in. The invite shows 500 Payke POINT for new users. Payke doesn't publish the invite amount on its website; the in-app campaign sets it, so check your My Point balance after sign-up. ZMH3HZVG is BonusRoam's own invitation code. Payke doesn't publish what the inviting account receives; whatever it credits goes to us.
At 10 points to ¥1, 500 points are ¥50, about 24p at the 23 October 2026 rate. That's about 15% of the cheapest Payke eSIM at ¥330; the 7-day 7GB plan at ¥1,300 needs 13,000 points. The invite is a nudge, not a saving; the app is the value.
Payke eSIM
Payke sells data-only eSIMs for Japan in two styles. Total-data plans ran from ¥330 for 2 days and 500MB to ¥12,000 for 31 days and 50GB on 24 October 2026, with ¥882 for 5 days and 5GB and ¥1,300 for 7 days and 7GB in between. Daily plans give 1GB, 2GB or 3GB a day for 3 to 10 days, from ¥660. Prices include Japanese consumption tax and change often.
The activation-code link arrives by email within one business day of ordering, and the plan's days count from the first day the network sees your phone connect, so set it up on arrival rather than the night before. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check its settings before you buy.
Japan's tax-free change on 1 November 2026
Until 31 October 2026, tax-free shops take Japan's consumption tax off at the till. For purchases from 1 November 2026, Japan switches to a refund method: you show your passport and pay the full price including tax, then customs checks the goods at the airport or seaport when you leave, and the shop or its refund company pays the tax back. It applies to ¥5,000 or more before tax in one shop on one day, the goods must leave Japan within 90 days, and consumables must stay unused.
Do the customs check at the airport kiosk before airline check-in and leave extra time; Japan's Tourism Agency says no one compensates a missed flight. Ask each shop how its refund is paid, to a card, an app or in cash, and keep the receipt with the goods until the refund lands.
Buying after you're home: proxy shopping and Payke Express
Payke Express is Payke's online shop for Japanese products shipped abroad at tax-free prices, with no Japanese consumption tax on international orders. Orders dispatch within 3 to 10 business days and take roughly 5 to 14 more to arrive. UK import VAT, any duty and the courier's handling fee are yours to pay on delivery, change-of-mind returns aren't accepted, and refusing to pay those charges forfeits both the goods and the refund.
The chat-based proxy service buys products for you in Japan. Payke doesn't publish its fees on an open page, so ask for the all-in total, shipping included, before you pay. Check that medicines and cosmetics are allowed into the UK before ordering; the buyer carries that responsibility under Payke Express's terms.
What users complain about
On 24 October 2026 Payke rated 4.6 out of 5 from 19 ratings on the UK App Store, 4.9 from 4,710 on the Taiwan store, and 4.9 from about 4,400 reviews on Google Play, with more than a million downloads. Version 5.14.0 arrived on 21 October 2026.
Complaints repeat a few themes: products that return no information, the app hanging on a loading or white screen after some updates (including after iOS 26.1), shopping-list features removed in a 2024 redesign, slow replies from support on proxy purchases, and translations that read awkwardly. Scanning itself gets steady praise.
Who should download it
Download it before any Japan trip where you'll shop for cosmetics, medicines, snacks or gifts, especially with allergies or dietary rules to check. Register through our link with ZMH3HZVG while you're at it; it costs nothing and the points can go towards an eSIM once you've earned more.
Skip the points entirely if you won't open the app again after the trip; they expire after a year of no activity. If you already have an eSIM or roaming plan sorted, the scanner and coupons are still worth having on the phone.
