SafePal Bank Review: Is the Free Swiss IBAN and Virtual Mastercard Worth Setting Up?
SafePal's Fiat24 gateway reviewed: what the free Swiss IBAN and virtual Mastercard really cost, the 10 USDC card activation, fees and limits, the 61 supported regions, the self-custody and deposit-protection catches, referral code 558693 and who should skip it.

Best for
Self-custody crypto users who are citizens and residents of one of the 42 card regions (most of Europe plus Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan) and want a Swiss IBAN and a Mastercard that spend from their own wallet.
Cheap to run, but not a bank account in the usual sense. Opening the account costs nothing, crypto top-ups are fee-free while SafePal's waiver lasts, transfers to other banks are free from SafePal and Fiat24, and the virtual Mastercard needs only a 10 USDC deposit to activate. The trade-offs are structural: the IBAN is held by Fiat24, a Swiss fintech whose balances aren't covered by Swiss deposit insurance; your account is an NFT in your own wallet, so a lost or leaked key puts it at risk; and card spending in a currency you don't hold costs 1%. Code 558693 adds no extra bonus: you get the same free account and card, and we get referral credit.
Pros
- No account opening, management or IBAN transfer fees from SafePal or Fiat24
- Crypto top-ups and deposits are fee-free while SafePal's waiver runs (standard rate 1%)
- The virtual Mastercard activates with a 10 USDC deposit and links to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and PayPal
- No exchange fee when you spend from a balance in the same currency (EUR, USD, CHF or CNY)
- Self-custody: the account and its EUR24, USD24 and CHF24 balances sit in your own wallet
- No credit check and no staking needed to qualify
Watch-outs
- Fiat24 balances aren't covered by Swiss deposit insurance (esisuisse)
- Lose the wallet's keys, or send the account NFT or balance tokens to the wrong address, and the money can be lost for good
- Citizenship and residence must both be in a supported region; 19 of the 61 get a $1,000-a-month account and no card
- 1% exchange fee on non-USD card spending you don't cover from a matching currency balance
- Registration needs your precise location within 2 km of your address and a passport scan
- Virtual card only, and no cash or token welcome bonus for new accounts

SafePal's promo and referral register page offer: open a Swiss bank account for free with no management fees; get a free virtual Mastercard supporting Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay; use cryptocurrency for daily expenses; and make seamless transfers with other bank accounts. SafePal's official Banking Gateway page says the Swiss IBAN / fiat gateway is offered with Fiat24 (compliance and licensing handled by Fiat24), with no account-creation or management fees marketed there, and a virtual Master debit card for eligible users. There is no cash reward: the free IBAN account and virtual Mastercard are standard for every new account. The card needs a 10 USDC deposit to activate, and code 558693 must be entered at NFT mint or within 7 days of opening. Country eligibility, KYC, fees beyond those claims, top-up/FX/gas costs and card limits depend on live SafePal / Fiat24 terms and the in-app Bank flow. Crypto, custody/platform and regional risks apply.

What SafePal Bank is
SafePal makes self-custody crypto wallets: the SafePal app, the S1 and X1 hardware wallets and a browser extension. Its Bank tab, which SafePal calls the Fiat Gateway, opens a Swiss IBAN account and a virtual Mastercard inside the app. The account itself is provided by Fiat24, a Swiss company SafePal has invested in, and Fiat24 alone handles licensing, compliance and identity checks. SafePal says it never sees your verification data.
Fiat24 is the trading name of SR Saphirstein AG in Zurich, which states that it holds a FINMA fintech licence under Article 1b of the Swiss Banking Act. That licence lets a firm take deposits without investing them or paying interest, and Switzerland's deposit insurer, esisuisse, lists money held at fintech-licence firms as not protected. Treat the IBAN as a payment account, not a savings account.
How the account works: an NFT and tokens in your wallet
When you open the account you mint an NFT on the Arbitrum network. That NFT is your account credential: whoever holds it, in a wallet they control, controls the account. Your money is shown as EUR24, USD24 and CHF24 tokens in the same wallet, each pegged one to one to the euro, US dollar and Swiss franc held in your Fiat24 account. Every transaction happens on Arbitrum and costs a small amount of gas in ETH.
This is where self-custody cuts both ways. Send EUR24 or USD24 to a wallet that isn't registered with Fiat24 and the tokens are frozen until the account NFT follows them; if you don't hold that wallet's private key, they are gone. One wallet address can mint only one account NFT, ever. If your key leaks, move the NFT to a new wallet first and then the tokens, and contact Fiat24's support bot on Telegram if anything has already moved.
The virtual Mastercard
Once the account is approved you activate a virtual Mastercard debit card, jointly issued by SafePal and Fiat24, by depositing 10 USDC on Arbitrum. You can add it to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and PayPal, and switch contactless, online and ATM use on or off. Full card details are shown on Fiat24's web page after you sign with your wallet; SafePal itself can't see them. There is no physical card.
Turn on the currency accounts you use, EUR, USD, CHF or CNY, and a purchase in that currency is paid from that balance with no exchange fee. If the matching balance can't cover it, the card falls back to your default currency. SafePal's FAQ sets card limits of $10,000 a day and $20,000 a month, with up to 100 payments a day and 500 a month; its Bank page also lists €1,600 a day for contactless payments.
Fees and limits
Account opening, account management, transfers between IBAN accounts and transfers to other banks cost nothing from SafePal or Fiat24, although the other bank may charge. Crypto top-ups and deposits are currently free under a long-term waiver SafePal can change; the standard rate is 1%, with tier rebates for active users. Mastercard payments settled in a currency other than US dollars carry a 1% exchange fee unless a matching currency balance pays them, and each refund costs 1 USD, 1 EUR, 1 CHF or 7 CNH to process.
The IBAN account itself is limited by region: $100,000 a month in the 42 card regions and $1,000 a month, with no card, in the other 19. Swapping crypto in the wallet carries a spread, and Arbitrum gas is paid on every on-chain step.
Referral code 558693: what it does
Enter 558693 in the referral code field when you mint your account NFT, or within seven days of opening the account at the latest. It doesn't change what you get: every new account has the same free IBAN and card, and SafePal doesn't pay new users a cash or token welcome bonus. Account tiers and their perks come from points you earn yourself by depositing, referring or staking SFP.
Disclosure: 558693 is our own referral code. If you top up at least 100 USDC within 30 days of opening the account, SafePal counts you as our referral: we receive 1,500 tier points and a share of any top-up fees your account pays, which is nothing while top-ups are free.
Opening the account step by step
Install the SafePal app (version 4.5.0 or later) and create or import a wallet. Hold at least 0.0001 ETH on Arbitrum in it; SafePal uses it to verify the wallet and charges nothing. Open the Fiat tab, tap Get Started, accept the terms, choose your account number and enter 558693, then mint the account NFT, which takes about 10 to 20 seconds.
Then register with Fiat24: confirm you are the sole owner, verify your email and phone, allow precise location (your device must be within 2 km of the address you enter) and scan your passport in the ReadID app. An email confirms when the account is live; after that, activate the card with 10 USDC.
What it's worth: a worked example
Say you are paid in USDC and spend $1,000 a month by card. Top up 1,000 USDC and you pay nothing today, against $10 at the standard 1% rate if the waiver ends. Spend that money in US dollars, or from a funded EUR, CHF or CNY balance in the matching currency, and the card adds no exchange fee. Spend it in another currency and the 1% fee costs $10 a month, $120 a year, plus a few cents of Arbitrum gas per transaction.
Against a crypto card that charges 2% or more abroad, that is cheap. The value isn't a bonus but low running costs and an IBAN in your own name: worth it if you move money between crypto and bank accounts regularly, not if you would open it for one card payment.
Who can open it
You must be a citizen of a supported region and live in one. The 42 regions that get the card are 24 of the 27 EU countries (not Bulgaria, Croatia or Malta), the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Faroe Islands, Åland, Réunion and Svalbard, plus Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan.
Nineteen more get an IBAN account limited to $1,000 a month with no card: Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Bangladesh, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Georgia, Indonesia, Mexico, North Macedonia, Peru, San Marino, Thailand, Turkey and Uruguay. The United States, mainland China, India, the Philippines, Nigeria and Brazil aren't on either list. Fiat24's own website currently says it isn't accepting new applications; SafePal's in-app registration guides were updated in October 2026, and if the Bank tab doesn't let you start, the service isn't open to you yet.
What users complain about
On 24 October 2026 the SafePal app was rated 4.7 from 17,383 ratings on the US App Store and 4.5 from 155,488 ratings on Google Play. These ratings cover the whole wallet, not just the bank feature.
Most one-star reviews come from scam victims: people called by fake exchange support and told to move their crypto into a new SafePal wallet whose recovery phrase the scammer already had. Self-custody means nobody can reverse those transfers. Other complaints are slow support replies, token balances that seemed to vanish after app updates, and, for the bank feature, a QR-code transfer screen whose camera wouldn't open.
Catches and risks
No deposit insurance covers your Fiat24 balance, and SafePal and Fiat24 can change fees, tiers and benefits at their discretion, including the top-up waiver. The account depends on your wallet: keep the recovery phrase offline, never share it, and remember that nobody from SafePal or Fiat24 will ever ask for it.
The registration checks are strict: precise location within 2 km of your address, a passport with a readable chip and one account NFT per wallet. Transfers to the wrong address can't be undone, and refunds from merchants take 3 to 5 working days after the merchant processes them.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
Get it if you already keep crypto in a self-custody wallet, are a citizen and resident of a card region, and want a cheap way to move between USDC and euros, dollars or francs and to spend with Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Skip it if you want a protected place for savings, need a physical card, aren't comfortable managing a recovery phrase, or live in an IBAN-only region where $1,000 a month and no card make it of limited use.
FAQ
- Does code 558693 give me a bonus?
- No separate bonus: you get the standard free IBAN account and virtual Mastercard. Enter it when you mint the account NFT, or within seven days of opening the account.
- Is it a real Swiss bank account?
- It is a Swiss IBAN from Fiat24, a FINMA-licensed fintech rather than a bank. Balances there aren't covered by Swiss deposit insurance.
- What does the card cost?
- Nothing to issue. You activate it with a 10 USDC deposit, which stays in your account to spend.
- Which countries can open it?
- Citizens and residents of 61 regions. 42 get the card, mostly in Europe plus Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan; 19 get an IBAN-only account capped at $1,000 a month.
- Does it work with Apple Pay?
- Yes. The virtual Mastercard can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and PayPal.
- What does spending abroad cost?
- Nothing extra when a matching EUR, USD, CHF or CNY balance pays; otherwise 1% on purchases settled in a currency other than US dollars.
- What happens if I lose my phone?
- Restore the wallet from its recovery phrase on a new device and the account NFT comes with it. Without the phrase, the account and its balance can't be recovered.
- Is there a physical card?
- No. SafePal offers only the virtual Mastercard, used online and through phone wallets.
