Smart Traveller Review UK: Is Plaza Premium's Free Lounge Club Worth Joining Before a Heathrow Trip?

Smart Traveller reviewed for UK flyers: what Plaza Premium's free membership gives you, the 150-point welcome offer and its vouchers, the activation step that trips people up, a Heathrow Terminal 4 price example, how points are earned and lost, app ratings, and who should bother.

Best for

UK travellers who pay for a Plaza Premium lounge at Heathrow, Gatwick or abroad at least once a year, or who often travel with a partner who would otherwise pay full price at the desk.

Join if you'll pay for a Plaza Premium lounge in the next year; skip it if you won't. Membership is free, and the welcome offer for anyone who joins by 31 December 2026 is 150 points, a free extra lounge hour, half-price entry for one companion and a 1GB eSIM. The money is in the 20% member discount and that companion voucher: at Heathrow Terminal 4's £49 from-price, two people pay £63.70 instead of £98. The 150 points are a starter balance: instant redemptions start at 60 points, and lounge entry in points is priced only inside the app. The app itself is clunky, with a 2.2-star rating on the UK App Store.

Pros

  • Free to join, with no annual fee and no card details needed
  • 20% off Plaza Premium Lounge entry, including Heathrow T2, T3 arrivals, T4 and Gatwick North
  • Welcome vouchers: a free extra hour and 50% off one companion's walk-in entry
  • A paid lounge entry earns 150 points, the same as the whole welcome bonus
  • Points stay alive as long as you earn or redeem once every 12 months

Watch-outs

  • 150 points is a starter balance; lounge entry in points is priced only inside the app
  • Nothing arrives until you click the activation email, and unactivated points are wiped
  • Weak app: 2.2 out of 5 from 11 ratings on the UK App Store
  • Points only count if you show your membership at the desk; you can't claim them later
  • Little to spend points on in the UK compared with Hong Kong and the rest of Asia

What Smart Traveller is

Smart Traveller is Plaza Premium Group's loyalty programme. Plaza Premium runs pay-at-the-door airport lounges, the Aerotel airport hotels, Root98 and Flight Club dining and the ALLWAYS meet-and-greet service. Members get a discount on those, earn points when they use them and spend the points in an in-app marketplace.

The programme belongs to Plaza Premium Lounge Management Limited in Hong Kong and runs on the Arrture loyalty platform; Hong Kong law governs it. Membership is free, lasts for life and is open to anyone aged 18 or over, one account per person. Points are a loyalty perk, not money: they have no cash value, can't be transferred and carry no deposit protection.

The welcome offer until 31 December 2026

Anyone who enrols by 31 December 2026 (Hong Kong time) gets four things: 150 welcome points credited when the account is set up, a complimentary extra hour at Plaza Premium Lounges, 50% off one companion's entry as a walk-in voucher, and a free 1GB eSIM. The points land in your balance; the other three appear as e-vouchers in the app's wallet.

Each voucher has its own validity, participating lounges and rules, printed on the voucher itself. Read them before you travel, because an extra hour only helps once you're already paying for a visit, and the companion voucher is for the desk, not for online bookings.

How the welcome offer works: register by 31 December 2026, Hong Kong time; click the activation email, because points are reset if the account isn't activated within 30 days; 150 ST Points are credited and the vouchers appear in the app wallet; then show your member QR code or voucher at the lounge desk. The welcome offer is 150 points, a complimentary extra hour, 50% off one companion's walk-in entry and a free 1GB eSIM.

Activation is the step people miss

Signing up only creates an account. Smart Traveller then emails an activation link, and until you click it you're an "incomplete member" and no points are issued. The booking site asks you to verify within 24 hours; the programme terms reset any points to zero and suspend the account if activation isn't done within 30 days of the email.

Register with the name on your passport. The terms require it to match your boarding pass when you earn or redeem, and a mismatch can get a transaction rejected. If the email doesn't arrive, check spam first, then use the app's Help & Support or [email protected].

Where it helps in the UK

Plaza Premium's own booking site lists departure lounges at Heathrow Terminals 2, 4 and 5, the Terminal 3 arrivals lounge, Aerotel London in Terminal 3, the Blush Lounge in Terminal 4, Plaza Premium at Gatwick North plus Plaza Express, and a partner lounge at Stansted. Its location finder also covers Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol and East Midlands. Online from-prices on 24 October 2026 ran from £22 for the T3 arrivals lounge to £49 for Terminal 4.

Member discounts are 20% at Plaza Premium Lounge, 10% at Plaza Premium First, 5% on Aerotel bookings made online, up to 5% on ALLWAYS meet-and-greet, and savings at Root98, Flight Club and the Intervals bar. You get them by booking online while logged in or by showing the e-membership card in the app before you pay at the desk.

What it's worth: two people at Heathrow Terminal 4

Take the Terminal 4 lounge at its £49 online from-price, and assume the desk charges the same on your day. Paying alone, the 20% member discount makes it £39.20, a £9.80 saving, and a paid entry earns 150 points. Bring a partner on the 50% companion voucher and they pay £24.50, so the pair pays £63.70 instead of £98: £34.30 saved on one visit.

That visit plus the welcome bonus leaves you with 300 points. The saving is real only if you'd have paid for the lounge anyway; a free coffee at the gate costs less than £63.70. Each voucher's own terms decide whether it can be used on the same visit as your member discount.

Two people at Plaza Premium Lounge, Heathrow Terminal 4, using the £49 online from-price of 24 October 2026: without membership two entries cost £98; a member alone pays £39.20 after 20% off and earns 150 points; a member plus one companion on the 50% voucher pays £39.20 plus £24.50, which is £63.70, saving £34.30, and ends with 300 points including the 150-point welcome bonus.

Earning points after the welcome bonus

A paid Plaza Premium Lounge entry earns 150 points, whether booked on the official site, paid at the desk or bought with cash in the Smart Traveller marketplace. Entry through an airline invitation, a corporate voucher, a credit card benefit or a Priority Pass card earns 100; entry through LoungeKey, Lounge Pass or a payment card's own access earns nothing. Plaza Premium First pays 300 for a paid visit and 150 for a complimentary one.

Airport dining earns 1 point per US$1 and Aerotel 2 points per US$1 of room charge when booked direct, and everything doubles in your birthday month if your date of birth is in your profile. Show your membership at the desk every time: points can't be claimed afterwards, they usually arrive within 14 days, and visits using vouchers, gift cards or other promotions earn nothing.

Spending points, and how they expire

Points are spent in the app's marketplace, where each reward shows its price. Instant redemptions at participating lounges start at 60 points, covering things like lounge upgrade passes, travel gadgets and seated massages. The website doesn't publish what a lounge-entry e-voucher costs in points; the marketplace shows it. You can gift those vouchers: a non-member just shows the QR code at the desk.

Points stay valid while you earn or redeem at least once every 12 months; after a year with no activity they can expire. Redemptions can't be reversed, and closing your account cancels whatever is left. Most redemption partners are in Hong Kong and the rest of Asia, so a UK-only traveller may struggle to find a use beyond lounge extras.

The referral code, and what we get

Our link opens Smart Traveller's sign-up page with the referral code JU8XWJ filled in. The welcome offer is the same for every new member who joins by 31 December 2026, so the code doesn't add anything for you; it records who referred you.

Disclosure: JU8XWJ is BonusRoam's own code, so we receive 50 ST Points once your account is activated. Smart Traveller pays a referrer once per new member and withholds the reward where it suspects misuse, such as re-registering a deleted account.

What users complain about

On 24 October 2026 the Smart Traveller app had 2.2 out of 5 from 11 ratings on the UK App Store, 3.8 from 27 on the Hong Kong App Store, and 3.1 from 230 reviews on Google Play, with over 100,000 downloads. The developer is Arrture Group Limited.

The recurring complaints are activation emails that never arrive, login loops after signing in with Apple, lounge visits whose points never appeared, passes bought in the app that didn't scan at the desk, and few places to spend points outside Asia. Screenshot your vouchers and keep receipts, because missing-points claims need proof from the last six months.

Who should join, who can skip it, and how to leave

Join if you'll pay to use a Plaza Premium lounge in the next year, often fly with a partner, or already get in through a credit card or Priority Pass and would like 100 points a visit. It costs nothing, and one paid visit for two at Heathrow T4 recovers the effort.

Skip it if you never pay for lounges, use only LoungeKey or Lounge Pass, or don't want another app collecting your travel data; Smart Traveller shares member data with partners to run the programme. To leave, delete the account in the app or write to the programme. Remaining points are cancelled, and you can't re-register with the same email or phone for 30 days.

FAQ

Is Smart Traveller free?
Yes. There's no joining or annual fee, membership doesn't expire, and you don't add a payment card to sign up.
Does the welcome offer get me into a lounge free?
No. You get 150 points, a free extra hour, 50% off one companion's walk-in entry and a 1GB eSIM. You still pay for your own entry, with 20% off as a member.
When does the welcome offer end?
It covers everyone who enrols by 31 December 2026, Hong Kong time. Activate the account from the email straight away, because points aren't issued until you do.
Does the code JU8XWJ give me anything extra?
No. The welcome offer is the same for all new members. The code records BonusRoam as your referrer, and we receive 50 ST Points when your account is activated.
What can 150 points buy?
Small extras: instant redemptions start at 60 points. Smart Traveller doesn't publish lounge-entry prices in points on its website; the marketplace in the app shows each one.
Do I earn points when I get in with my credit card or Priority Pass?
Yes, 100 points per Plaza Premium Lounge visit with a Priority Pass card, a credit card benefit, an airline invitation or a corporate voucher. LoungeKey, Lounge Pass and a payment card's own access earn nothing.
Do my points expire?
Only if you go 12 months without earning or redeeming. Any earning or redemption pushes the expiry back at least another 12 months.
