Capital One Refer a Friend Review (US): Which Card, and Is the Bonus Worth It?
Capital One's US refer-a-friend link reviewed: the eligibility check, the 14 cards it covers, what the welcome offers are worth, the APRs and fees, who can't get a bonus, the Discover change and who should skip it.
Last updated 12 October 2026

Best for
People new to Capital One with a US address and an SSN or ITIN who want to see which cards they'd be approved for before applying, and who pay the balance in full every month.
The link is a way in, not a bonus. You get the welcome offer of the card you pick, and Capital One says offers on the referral page may differ from those on its public card pages. On the public offers, Quicksilver and Savor pay $200 for $500 of spending in three months with no annual fee, about $207 to $215 in year one. Venture's 75,000 bonus miles, the 8,000 miles earned on the $4,000 spend and the $300 stays credit come to about $1,035 after its $95 fee, valuing miles at the 1 cent Capital One itself uses, but only if you'd book travel through Capital One Travel. Carry a balance and rates of 18.74% to 29.24% eat that quickly. Run the check through our link and look at the bonus shown for your card before you submit the application.
Pros
- An eligibility check in as little as 90 seconds that Capital One says won't harm your credit score
- One check covers 14 cards, from secured cards for building credit to Venture
- Quicksilver and Savor publicly offer $200 after $500 of spending in three months, with no annual fee
- No foreign transaction fees on Quicksilver, Savor and Venture
- Capital One doesn't tell the person who referred you whether you applied or were approved
- $0 Fraud Liability if your card is lost or stolen, subject to Capital One's investigation
Watch-outs
- Offers on the referral page "may have different terms" from the public ones, and you only see them after the check
- No welcome bonus if you've had one on the same card in the past 48 months (for Venture, a Venture X bonus counts too)
- Purchase APRs of 18.74% to 29.24% variable once any 0% period ends
- Venture costs $95 a year, and QuicksilverOne and SavorOne $39
- US only: you need a US address and an SSN or ITIN, so recent arrivals without one can't apply
- Low credit limits and long support waits are common complaints, and Trustpilot scores Capital One US 1.2

What the link is, and what it isn't
The link opens Capital One's US refer-a-friend page with the referrer's code attached. From there you run Capital One's eligibility check, compare the cards you're offered and apply. The cards are issued by Capital One, N.A. for people living in the United States. Capital One UK is a separate business with its own cards, and we found no refer-a-friend scheme there.
You don't get a separate bonus for using the link. The person who referred you may get one if you're approved and open a card: Capital One shows referrers their amount only when they sign in, caps what they can earn each calendar year, can take up to 8 weeks to pay it and may report it to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC. Capital One says it won't tell them whether you applied or were approved, although a bonus arriving may give it away.
Disclosure: the link on this page is our own Capital One referral link, so we may receive a referral bonus if you're approved through it.
The 14 cards the check covers
The referral page checks your eligibility for 14 consumer cards in four families. Platinum and Platinum Secured are for building credit. The Quicksilver family has five versions, including a secured card and a student card; Quicksilver itself pays 1.5% cash back on every purchase. The Savor family has four; Savor itself pays 3% at grocery stores (not superstores such as Walmart and Target), on dining, entertainment and popular streaming services, and 1% on everything else. Venture earns 2X miles on every purchase and sits alongside VentureOne and VentureOne for Good Credit. Quicksilver and Savor also pay 5% on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, and Venture earns 5X. The pages we read don't give the other versions' rewards, so check them in your offer.
Venture X is not on the list. Capital One labels Quicksilver, Savor and Venture as cards for excellent credit and Platinum as one for fair credit. QuicksilverOne, SavorOne and the three "for Good Credit" versions carry a 29.24% variable APR, and QuicksilverOne and SavorOne charge $39 a year.
The welcome offer you'll actually see
Capital One puts the catch plainly on the referral page: "Cards you're offered may have different terms, including introductory rates and bonuses, from those available elsewhere on our website." The bonus for each card appears only after the eligibility check, so we can't tell you in advance what it will be.
As a guide to what these bonuses look like, Capital One's card pages listed these welcome offers on 11 October 2026: Quicksilver, $200 once you spend $500 within 3 months of opening; Savor, $200 once you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months; Venture, a limited-time 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months, plus a one-time $300 Capital One Travel stays credit for hotels and vacation rentals that expires a year after opening. The referral page may show different offers, so none of these is promised.
Bonuses are added to your rewards balance within two billing cycles of qualifying. You won't get one if you've received a new cardmember bonus for the same card in the past 48 months; for Venture, a Venture X bonus in that time also rules you out.
What to do: run the check through our link, note the bonus, spend requirement and APR shown for the card you want, and only submit the application on that page once you're happy with them.
What the first year is worth
On the public offers, paying in full each month: Quicksilver's $200 plus 1.5% on the $500 you spend is $207.50, with no annual fee. Savor's $200 plus 3% on $500 of groceries, dining or streaming is $215. Venture's 75,000 miles plus 8,000 from earning 2X on the $4,000 come to 83,000 miles. At 1 cent a mile, the rate Capital One's own Venture calculator uses (52,800 miles for $528), that's about $830. Add the $300 stays credit if you'd book a hotel or vacation rental through Capital One Travel in your first year, take off the $95 fee, and the first year is worth about $1,035.
After year one the bonus is gone and the cards are plain earners. Spending $1,000 a month on Venture earns 24,000 miles, about $240 a year at 1 cent, of which the $95 fee takes roughly 40%. Venture also gives a statement credit of up to $120 for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee paid with the card, once every 4 years, which we haven't counted.
Rates, fees and the interest catch
Every rate is variable and moves with the Prime Rate. After any 0% period, Quicksilver, Savor and VentureOne charge 18.74% to 28.74%; Quicksilver's terms set it at 18.74%, 24.74% or 28.74% depending on your creditworthiness. Venture is 19.74% to 28.74%, the student cards 18.74% to 28.74% with no intro period, and Platinum, the secured cards, QuicksilverOne, SavorOne and the "for Good Credit" cards 29.24%.
Interest is charged daily (the APR divided by 365) on your average daily balance. At 28.74%, carrying $1,000 for 30 days costs about $23.62. Once you start paying interest, you generally have to pay the full balance two statements in a row before it stops appearing. The minimum payment is $25 or 1% of the balance plus new interest and late fees, whichever is greater.
Quicksilver's terms also list a late fee of up to $40, cash advances at $5 or 5% (whichever is greater) with interest from the day you take one, and balance transfers at 3% in the first 15 months and 4% on later promotional offers. You can't transfer a balance from another Capital One card. Your due date is at least 25 days after each statement closes, and new purchases aren't charged interest if you paid the previous balance in full.
On the plus side, Quicksilver, Savor and Venture charge no foreign transaction fees, and under the Fair Credit Billing Act you can dispute a billing error by writing to Capital One within 60 days of the statement it first appeared on.
Who can apply
These conditions come from Quicksilver's application terms; check the terms of the card you're offered, which may differ. You need an address in one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico or a US military location, to be 18 or over, and to have a valid Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. If you're moving to the US, that means waiting until you have both a US address and an SSN or ITIN.
You aren't eligible if you've applied for a Capital One credit card two or more times in the last 30 days, have a past-due Capital One card or are over your limit on one, had a Capital One card charged off in the past year, have a bankruptcy that hasn't been discharged, or have a credit freeze or lock that stops Capital One reading your credit report, so lift it before you apply. If you give no asset information, your monthly income must exceed your rent or mortgage by at least $425 ($215 for students).
The referral only counts for new Capital One card customers. If you already hold a Capital One consumer or small business card as the primary cardholder, you can still apply, but the person who referred you won't get a bonus. A current Discover cardholder who isn't a Capital One customer still counts as new.
Applying through the link
Open the link and stay on that page. Select "Check My Eligibility" and complete the form; Capital One says the check takes as little as 90 seconds and won't harm your credit score. If you leave the page, come back to the link before you apply, or the referral isn't recorded.
Pick a card and apply from the same page. The application should show "your referral information has been applied". Applying is a credit application: you authorise Capital One to check your consumer report and your checking account data and to verify your income, employment and other details, and it may ask you to confirm information before it opens the account. Secured cards need the minimum security deposit first.
If you're approved, Capital One mails a physical card. A virtual card number may be available in the app, but not to everyone, and in some cases not until about 30 days after opening.
Discover, and using the card abroad
Capital One's help pages say Discover Bank has merged into Capital One, N.A. Press reports quoting Capital One say some new Quicksilver, Savor and Venture accounts now run on the Discover network rather than Visa or Mastercard. The Capital One pages we read on 11 October 2026 don't say which network a new card uses, so treat that as unconfirmed and check the logo on the card you receive.
It matters abroad. The no-foreign-fee cards are good travel companions on paper, but a review on Capital One's own Quicksilver page says the card, now on Discover, isn't accepted in most places the reviewer travels, where the earlier Visa version was. If you travel, carry a second card on another network.
What cardholders complain about
On 11 October 2026 the Capital One Mobile app was rated 4.8 from 11,174,878 ratings on the US App Store (version 6.55.1, released 5 October 2026) and 4.5 from 1.72 million reviews on Google Play, with more than 50 million downloads. Capital One's own card pages show 4.5 for Quicksilver (6,529 reviews), 4.5 for Platinum (9,568) and 4.6 for Venture (10,908). Trustpilot's Capital One US profile scores 1.2 from 4,315 reviews, covering the bank as well as the cards.
The recurring complaints: high APRs that Capital One won't lower, low credit limits that don't rise despite years of on-time payments, accounts closed over suspected fraud with unredeemed rewards lost, payments held before the credit is released, long customer-service waits, Discover-network cards declined abroad, and app errors.
Closing the card
Sign in, choose the card, select "I want to" and then "Close Account" under "Control Your Card", and Capital One guides you through the rest. Capital One doesn't charge a fee to close a card, but any balance still has to be paid off, and statements keep coming until it reaches zero.
Redeem your rewards first: Quicksilver's terms say you may lose any rewards you haven't redeemed once the account is closed, and Venture's stays credit can only be used while the account is open and in good standing.
Who should use it, and who should skip it
Use it if you live in the US with an SSN or ITIN, don't hold a Capital One card, want to see which cards you'd be approved for before a full application, and will pay in full every month. Quicksilver or Savor suit a first rewards card with no annual fee. Venture only makes sense if you'll spend $4,000 in three months on bills you'd pay anyway and will use the miles and the Capital One Travel credit.
Skip it if you already hold a Capital One card (you can apply, but the referral doesn't count), if you've had the same card's bonus in the last 48 months, if you've applied for Capital One cards twice in the last 30 days, if you'd carry a balance, or if you need a card that's accepted everywhere abroad and can't confirm its network. If you live in the UK, this link isn't for you.
FAQ
- Do I get a bonus for using a Capital One referral link?
- Not a separate one. You get the welcome offer of the card you're approved for, which Capital One shows after the eligibility check and which may differ from its public card pages. The person who referred you may get a referral bonus.
- Will checking my eligibility hurt my credit score?
- Capital One says the check won't harm your score. Applying for the card is a credit application, and you authorise Capital One to check your consumer report when you do.
- Is the welcome bonus the same as on Capital One's website?
- Not necessarily. The referral page says offers may have different terms, including intro rates and bonuses, from those elsewhere on Capital One's website. It shows the bonus for each card after the eligibility check, so check the one shown for your card before you submit the application.
- Can I use the link if I already have a Capital One card?
- You can apply, but the referral won't count, so the person who referred you gets nothing. If you hold a Discover card but no Capital One card, you still count as a new customer.
- Is the Venture X card included?
- No. The referral page checks 14 cards, from Platinum to VentureOne for Good Credit, and Venture X isn't one of them.
- Can I apply if I've just moved to the US?
- Only once you have an address in the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico or a US military location and a valid SSN or ITIN, and you're 18 or over.
- When does the welcome bonus arrive?
- On the public Quicksilver, Savor and Venture offers, within two billing cycles of meeting the spend. The person who referred you can wait up to 8 weeks for theirs.
- Will the person who referred me find out I applied?
- Capital One says it won't tell anyone whether you applied or were approved, but a referral bonus appearing may let them work it out, especially if they referred no one else.
